SIERRA de GORZOLA

Granada has been high on the must visit list but to see the Alhambra Palace, we had to order tickets well in advance with date and time specified. ONLY 20.000 people (yes you read correctly) are allowed per day. It is all too reminiscent of the Acropolis, Athens, where you have guards whistling “Please don’t stop, move on..” all in 40degree or over heat. Suddenly it lost its appeal. We will fly in another time, during the springtime perhaps..
We motored to the mountains instead, through acres and acres of plastic shanties. It looked like Tunisia at its worse. In fact we did not see anything like it there on such a scale.
It was a long drive before we reached the undulating olives groves and sunflower fields. It was such a contrast; the sort of scene, which must have sent the impressionist painters scurraying excitedly to their paint brushes. It reminded me of a patchwork quilt.

The towns of Baeze and Ubeda were given the World heritage status in 2003. A well deserved accolade. There were architectural delights, with very few people about, except us “Mad dogs and Englishmen out in the midday sun!”
