NEWS of SCORCH

CHRISTOPHER and GERALDINE have been travelling on their yacht 'SCORCH of WESSEX' since 3rd October, 2002.
They have spent the first 5 years in the Medditerean. They crossed the Atlantic in December 2007.
They are currently in the Caribbean.

An AVERAGE DAY

Unlike the previous night at Ile Ronde where the ground swell and disturbed sea created an uncomfortable roll, resulting in a wakeful night, last night anchored at Saline Island S. Of Carriacou, was a gentle rocking so we slept soundly. We decided to have an early swim in this enchanted anchorage, described by Donald Street as his “favourite mooring in the whole of the Caribbean” an apt and well deserved description.

The snorkelling to the nearest reef was extraordinary. Caroline and I decided to go back after breakfast to take photos. The underwater flora, corals, fungus and sponges with their beautiful vivid colours were different to the previous expeditions. We saw a green turtle too elusive and too shy to be photographed, unlike the Trumpet fish, squirrelfish, angelfish and banded butterfly fish. I am always fascinated by the Yellow Damselfish Juvenile with its translucent vivid blue and very light blue spots shimmering in the sunlight like jewels reminding me of a Faberge Egg. One of my favourite fish; the spotted trunkfish, gracefully allowed me to get close and acted like a star.

Meanwhile whilst we girls snorkelled the Captain decided to free dive and clean the propeller which was exhibiting a Rasta hairstyle. On our return the cockpit was in uproar, Chris had decided to spring-clean the back of the boat and soon we three were embroiled in a major scrub. The end result was rewarding.

Conch, which Chris had dived for the previous day, was on the menu and had to be dealt with. Not an easy task. Chris will need more practice!

After lunch we decided to spend the afternoon on the beach to recover.

Back on board, Rum Punch in hand, we decided to initiate Caroline to the game of Triominos and Rummikub letter game (in my view more exciting than Scrabble).

Spicy Conch a la Christopher was served for dinner. Delicious and tender too....

To round up the evening we set the Surround sound Cinema in the Cockpit and watched ‘Last chance to see’ a documentary with Stephen Fry.

By 10.30pm we were happy to call it a day!
