GRUESOME EXHIBITS - 10th Oct. 2008

We spent an hour or so in the Museo Regional this morning. It was fascinating but some exhibits were fairly disturbing. There was a fairly gruesome display of mummies, trepanned skulls, grave artefacts and trophy heads. It would appear that the taking of trophy heads in the region was related to specific beliefs. These skulls were  presumably hunted and collected in battle.  The exhibits dated around 2000BC

The remarkable state of preservation is due the extremely dry environment.

The most striking of the museum’s collection is its display of Paracas Textiles. Enigmatic in their apparent coding of colours and patterns these clothes were mostly used for funeral. What is so incredible is the fact they have retained their colours after 2000 years.

We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool.
