We knew that there was a small, and by repute, good Yard in Tyrrel Bay, where hopefully we could haul out to investigate the rudder problem. After close investigation it was obvious that that the rudder stock welding had cracked and separated from the mild steel plate (a faulty design) and the only thing that stopped the rudder falling off was this roughness with a certain amount of interlocking. A very scary situation could have happened. A good thing we were not in the Pacific!...
Primarily investigation The problem
The solution The end result
To have a new rudder made would have taken a long time plus delivery time. Christmas was looming. Staying in one spot unable to move did not appeal as the children were arriving on Christmas day. Chris decided that it was not rocket science. Excellent repairs were made by the brilliant, competent, obliging engineers and yard staff. The repaired rudder was much stronger than before. The latter had lasted 19 years.
We took the opportunity to do the yearly maintenance, the antifouling was done. Red was the only available colour in Grenada (I agree, it is awful!..). The hull was polished.
Looking very smart
Afloat after 9 days on land!
The yard although small and rural turned out one the best we have hauled out.
Carriacou, we are told, is old Caribbean. The locals are very welcoming and friendly. We have decided to return here for a while after spending Christmas in mainland Grenada, to chill out and use it as a springboard to visit the Grenadines.
