SHY LOCALS

Isla Graciosa (61/2 km x 3 km wide) is the 1st place we landed after leaving Gibraltar. It is a flat island with 4 volcanic cones, and in September it is devoid of vegetation giving it a moon crater look. The 360ยบ views from it’s most southern hill are breathtaking.
There are only 2 small villages: Puerto la Sociedad and Pedro Barba (the latter been the prettier)
The locals are friendly on a part-time basis: before and after the ferry from Lanzarote stops bringing tourists when the place return to its normality. It is almost as if a shutter comes down during the day>
We moored in what is considered one of the safest and best anchorages in the Canaries. Time will tell……
As we go south internet cafes are elusive and it is nearly a month since we have found one. Of course having email send/received facility aboard takes the heat out of searching for one. Blog up dates, hotmail pick up and banking still requires it. Talking of up dates, having spent time writing and selecting the photos for the blog, we undertook the challenging 40 mins walk a few times over the sand dunes to the hick town of Graciosa where, we were told, a very dour owner of 4 internet posts was operating, only to find it closed. The opening hours are very sporadic and not advertised. 3 days ago we hit the jackpot: Rosa’s Internet at 18.00 was operating. Armed with our USB stick, ready to enlighten the world, I worked for 2 hours, only to manage up dating some Historical blogsite of Lanzarote, to my cries of dismay and near tears of absolute frustration the Grunty manager, tried to comfort the damsel in distress but I am sure he thought I was totally barmy. I was working on my own site, and it should have been impossible to publish it elsewhere. Not a successful trip. Chris got into trouble when he tried to SKYPE. “Scorch of Wessex” was rejected due to the SEX bit. Thank God the guy did speak some English or we could have been ejected as some frustrated old imbalanced sex maniacs....”Scorch of Wessex is the name of our boat and Wessex was a county” we told him. Our explanation was reluctantly accepted. He bypassed the parental lock and Chris was able to speak to few people. I was too mentally exhausted to try again. He assured me he would be open in the morning. We walked back to the boat in pitch dark with our tails between our legs arguing the fact that the modern technology should be left to the young, and knowledgeable. Only to find that PUFF, our dinghy, was waiting beached on a reef!!!, we had been longer than expected and the tide had gone done. We needed a stiff drink to recover by the time when we got aboard Scorch
Next morning armed with my own computer in a rucksack (weighting tonnes) Chris stayed aboard. I got there only to find that on Fridays he only opened in the afternoon. It was only 10.00 am. Hopefully the next stop, a touristy town south of Lanzarote will have better facilities within sight of the boat! Chris thinks I am wasting my time as probably very few people read the blog...
Not all was negative. On my walk I managed to see a Godwit and some pipits; Fascinating and talkative birds.
Between relaxing, walking, swimming and much socialising, 2 weeks have passed and it is time to move on!.

Sunset in Playa Francesa

Even the plants suffer from water shortage!

How about that for a quiet beach

What clear water even at 270m high!
